Research Interests:

Prof. Sohn's research focuses on materials and coatings for extreme environment including gas turbines, nuclear fuels, and armor/anti-armor with fundamental emphasis on multicomponent intrinsic and interdiffusion in multiphase alloys, phase-field microstructure simulation, thermal barrier coatings and protective metallic/ceramic coatings, oxidation, hot corrosion and environmental degradation, thermotransport and irradiation-enhanced diffusion, kinetic energy materials and superlight-weight metal-matrix composites, and materials characterization. Prof. Sohn's research activities have been funded by National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, Department of Defense, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Siemens Power Generation, Mitsubishi Power Systems, Solar Turbines Incorporated, General Electric Company, Lockheed-Martin Missiles and Fire Control, and Doosan Heavy Industries. Additional contribution to his research, technically and financially have been given by Idaho National Laboratory, Army Research Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Pratt & Whitney, Howmet Research Corporation, DWA Aluminum Composite Corporation, National Institute for Materials Science (Japan). He has published over 75 journal papers and over 50 proceeding papers. He gave over 200 presentations including over 50 plenary/keynote/invited lectures at conferences around the globe. He is a recipient of CAREER award from National Science Foundation, UCF's 2006 research incentive award, UCF's 2007 teaching incentive award, 2006 Young Scientist Travel Grant from Japan, 2008 ChangJiang Scholar Travel Grant from China. He is a member of editorial board for Defects and Diffusion Forum, and serves as chair, officer and member of many technical committees and symposium organizers for many professional societies. He is currently serving as an AMPAC Associate Director for Materials Characterization Facility at UCF.
