Ph.D. Mechanical Engineering, Florida Institute of Technology, 1991

Research Interests:

Dr. Muthusamy V. Swami is Program Director, Simulation Software Development at the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC). He holds a doctoral degree, has been with the center since 1983, and leads the analytical research and software capability development. His primary area of research is the development of accurate simulation models and detailed analyses of phase change, air flows, heat, mass and contaminant transport relating to building energy use and indoor air quality. This includes developing detailed computer models from the governing equations using advanced numerical methods, developing the numerical algorithms, experimental and analytical verification and analyses. In projects he managed for the Florida Radon Research Program (FRRP), he oversaw the development of enhanced capabilities for modeling radon entry and dispersal in residential and commercial buildings and analyzed residential and non-residential buildings for indoor radon levels. His buildings-related research has addressed radon entry, transport and dispersal, radiant energy transfer, pressure coefficient correlations for natural ventilation, and combined thermal and moisture storage, energy code development/update and compliance and rating software development. As part of the US Navy's Immune Building Toolkit (IBTK) program, his recent work include projects for the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWDD) funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in developing translations from IFC-compatible CAD building models to NIST's contaminant analysis model - CONTAM. He has mastery in the state-of-the-art of software development - both, scientific and business software. Areas of expertise include design of database, software architecture, prototyping, development, testing, and distribution, using the latest development platforms and data access tools. He is the principal developer of the EnergyGauge® Summit, FSEC's software which performs calculations for code compliance, energy rating including LEED, Federal Energy Tax deduction and energy analysis. Dr. Swami has numerous publications in his areas of expertise and demonstrated track record attracting contracts and grants, particularly in new and innovative energy/air quality areas. He has successfully managed and completed several individual and team projects. He has excellent contact with funding agencies such as, US EPA, US DOE, US Navy, Florida DCA and numerous others. He has been a project manager or team lead on externally sponsored research projects valued at several million dollars.
