Research Interests:

Dr. Maupin-Furlow is a microbial physiologist and biochemist with research expertise in the metabolic engineering of cells for the production of renewable fuels and chemicals. Her research is focused on the genetic engineering of extremophiles including methogenic and halophilic archaea as well as thermotolerant Gram-positive bacteria. Her research employs biochemical, molecular, genomic, and structural biology techniques to investigate microbial metabolism and physiology. Dr. Maupin-Furlow has organized and obtained funding for several biotechnology and biofuels related conferences including an International Conference on Interfacing Microbiology and Biotechnology, a Workshop on the Integration of Genomics and Bioinformatics in Molecular Life Sciences, and an Annual Meeting of the Southeastern Branch of the American Society for Microbiology. She is past-President of the Southeastern Branch of the American Society for Microbiology and member of the Florida Center for Renewable Chemicals and Fuels, American Society of Microbiology, American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, American Chemical Society, and Sigma Xi. She is also a member of the International Committee of Systematic Bacteriology Subcommittee on the Taxonomy of Methanogens. She is an Editorial Board member of Archaea and Frontiers in Bioscience. In addition, Dr. Maupin-Furlow is a past and present member of national grant review panels for the United States Department of Agriculture, Department of Energy, and National Institutes of Health including those focused on biobased products and bioenergy production as well as microbial metabolism and physiology. She has 23 peer-reviewed publications, 51 abstracts, and 3 patents on metabolic engineering microorganisms for the production of renewable fuels and chemicals.
