Education:
Ph.D. Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1983
Research Interests:
Dr. Kumar is a professor in Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering ("MMAE"). Dr. Kumar focuses his research in two-phase flow modeling, CFD and experiments, Nanofluids, Measurements and Molecular Dynamics modeling in micro channel flows, Natural and Mixed Con vection heat transfer, Turbulence. Dr. Kumar has previously held the position as Department Chair for MMAE. He has also received a Commendation for Outstanding Achievement in Two- Phase Flor Experimental and Model Development by Lockheed Martin. He has also served in over 25 MS thesis committees including 8 Ph.D. committees as advisor and chairman, and over 30 thesis committees as a member. During 1993-2002 he worked with Lockheed Martin as Technical Lead where he spearheaded a team to develop a next-generation code for coolant flow in microchannels to calculate flow topology and performance to quantify time-resolved behavior of microbubbles, coalescing into transition and annular vapor flow. He developed mechanistic interfacial force and turbulence models in transition flow. He has received funding from the National Science Foundation, Lockheed Martin, High Tech Corridor Council, and many others.
